| M'LOP TAPANG REACHES OUT TO MORE CHILDREN |
|
| |
|
With support from International Childcare Trust, M’Lop Tapang has just equipped and furnished a newly constructed extension to its main centre, helping it meet the massive demand for its services - over the past 12 months, the number of children and their families using M’Lop Tapang’s facilities increased by 20%! The new building, which includes a 24-hour medical clinic and five classrooms for non-formal education, computer training, art-therapy, and music and dance classes, will make such a difference to the lives of hundreds of street and working children living in Sihanoukville, southern Cambodia.
Within just a few days of opening, around 40 children were already learning to play newly purchased musical instruments, over 100 children were taking part in art classes, and 200 students had enrolled on a new computer course.
"I like how I can learn music everyday now in the new music room. I now know two new songs on the piano!" Veasna, 11 years old |

| FOOTBALL FEVER HITS MOROGORO |
|
| |
Sport can play an extremely important part in the rehabilitation of street children. Faraja Trust Fund, ICT’s partner in Tanzania, runs a number of sports activities, which are making a big difference to the lives of children in a slum area of Morogoro.
In July 2009, Faraja established a street children’s football team in Chamwino slum, a densely populated area in Morogoro, central Tanzania. The team, dubbed the Chamwino Dream Team after beating ICT’s Cycle Tanzania participants in 2009, offers children a way out of life on the streets. As well as boosting their health, sport can improve academic performance, reduce delinquent behaviour, and help build self-esteem. During training sessions, the children are also taught about issues such as sexual health, substance abuse and chid rights.
“The daily training has changed my life - I used to be lazy but now I train with my team mates every day. I have discovered that I have a football talent and dream that one day I will play for one of the biggest teams in Europe!” Kweli, 16 years old
As we approach the first World Cup to be staged in Africa, the Chamwino Dream Team is gearing up for the Copa Coca-Cola U-17 National Championship, a national youth tournament, which aims to nurture new talent. This is the first time they have entered a tournament as big as this… a challenge which they are relishing.
