Read about how sponsorship changed Dayani's life:

Dayani Wasantha lost her mother during the Tsunami, so her father was left to take care of her and her 2 siblings. This task proved hard for her father who eventually stopped going to work. Dayani and her family were left in utter poverty. At the time, Dayani was studying for her Advanced level examinations. But the trauma of the Tsunami, losing her mother, and seeing her family fall apart meant that she could not give her studies the proper time and attention they needed. As such, she failed to obtain the required marks to go to university.

When Shilpa intervened to help her and her family however, everything changed. Since her father was no longer working, and hence no longer had an income, Dayani could not attend school. But thanks to the child sponsorship scheme she and her siblings were able to continue and complete their studies. On top of this, Shilpa was able to provide assistance by regularly visiting the household and keeping up with the school to learn of the children’s performance and progress. Alongside were the regular art and dance therapy sessions to help children deal with traumatic and stressful experiences.

Today Dayani has set up a ‘brick-making’ business with the help of Shilpa and its micro-finance loans. It is through child sponsorship schemes that Shilpa is able to free up enough money to focus on activities of counselling and micro-finance. If it weren’t for sponsors, Shilpa would have to spend the bulk of its income on merely providing the children with food and education.

By becoming a Child Sponsor today you can change a young person’s life.
