Kitgum Concerned Women’s Association (KICWA)
KICWA was formed in 1998 by a group of women volunteers who were concerned about the plight of formerly abducted children from Kitgum District in northern Uganda. KICWA runs a Reception and Reintegration Centre that responds to the needs of formerly abducted children and their families. To date, KICWA has helped reintegrate more than 4,000 children. Now as the number of children returning from captivity has decreased due to the peace process, KICWA is focusing on the resettlement needs of communities displaced by the conflict, as well as ongoing support for former abductees.
“[Being a former child soldier] prepared me to work for formerly abducted children because I could quickly imagine exactly what they went through and how I can help them. KICWA offers that avenue for somebody to move from a structured kind of life in the bush to a better life in the community where one can be accepted and become part of the community.” Christopher Arwai, Programme Manager
KICWA established the Girl Soldiers and War Affected Children project in early 2008. This project promotes the rights and reintegration of former girl soldiers/sex slaves and their children born in captivity.
Education & Livelihoods of War Affected Communities is a new project, which will assist formerly displaced communities who are attempting to resettle in Kitgum District.
